Billionaires Are Buying Up Units at the Porsche Design Tower

porsche design tower in miami
Find out why a gaggle of the world's billionaire's are buying up units at the forthcoming Porsche Design Tower.

Units at developer Gil Dezer’s Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach have been selling wildly, with about 80 percent of the 132 units reserved at the time of writing. Residences range in size from 4,800 to 17,000 square feet and include sky garages. Buyers at the building, which is currently under construction, reportedly include “nearly two dozen” of the world’s billionaires, according to Dezer himself, representing a small but statistically significant percentage of global wealth. No doubt the building’s most unusual architectural feature, a trio of tubular glass automobile elevators extending the length of its 57 stories, was part of the appeal. 18555 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach, 305-974-2026

The South Beach Guide to Selfies and Step and Repeat Posing

Everyone has an angle. And sometimes when the spotlight’s on, we’ll do anything to find it.

Miami guide to selfies

It seems everyone in Miami has an angle and works it whenever a camera is within range, which these days is pretty much 24/7. Whether it’s chin up or down, legs crossed, cheeks sucked in, or lips in a trout pout, in this Instagram world, a good picture is apparently worth a thousand words and just as many hours of rehearsal time in front of a mirror.

Though some label us narcissists, and there’s definitely some truth to this, socialites, reality television stars, and social media samurais have become role models—hopefully you weren’t thinking Sheryl Sandberg or Hillary Clinton—for Miami’s next gen eager to learn how best to look picture perfect for its close-up. But while we’ve studied Kim K’s online tutorial for taking the perfect selfie and tried “squinching” our eyes to ooze confidence—which actually can make you look angry or constipated—is there more we can do when the red carpet comes calling?

After years of endless A-list late nights, the omnipresent Seth Browarnik, founder of Miami’s celebrity photography agency World Red Eye, has seen it all from behind the lens. “Don’t try to be a Kim K, because we make fun of that kind of person. We want the girl with an aura who is jumping up and down exuding energy and not making a duck face.”

But Real Housewife of Miami Marysol Patton claims she does mimic celebrities because “social media has made everyone more self-conscious, so I’ve been learning as I go along and I observe what other people do,” and she suggests, “Cross your legs, start with the body sideways, turn your shoulders more toward the camera, and toss your head back.” Anyway, who better to learn from than someone who does it for a living? By the way, there’s nothing on the planet more important than this, so please take note.

But while remembering to flip your hair, put one hand on your hip with the arm away from the body to avoid bat wings, and your elbow pointed downward to look seductive and skinny (of course, the fellas can flash the sideways peace sign), body language expert Patti Wood, author of Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language & Charisma, says, “Since we’re giving out a thousand cues in a photo, it’s important to think happy thoughts, and if your emotions are true, there’s a higher chance of the photo coming across.”

Would I be happier if my eyes were bigger and spaced farther apart, my upper lip fuller, and my hair like Secretariat’s mane? Of course, but that’s for when I come back as Angelina or Gisele. But after too many pictures I quickly delete, it seems I look best when not focused on myself or worrying about how others view me. And that’s the issue; we’ve become victims of a selfie-centric social media world where the only relationship that counts is the one with an iPhone or a camera lens, or Instagram following! What really should matter is your relationship with close friends and family…. like in Kim Kardashian’s case, all 12 million of them.

5 Miami DJs Who Are Changing the Game

$

Although South Beach clubs continue to host the world’s biggest DJs behind the decks, the arrival of Wynwood as a major destination for the more independent, arts-minded set has brought a range of new sounds to Miami for which you once had to travel to New York or Los Angeles.

As the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival inundates Miami with DJs from all over the world, these five spinsters are reshaping Miami one mix at a time:

Richard Haig
Panic Bomber, aka Richard Haig

RISK TAKER: Panic Bomber

Richard Haig doesn’t play it safe. Never has. His first forays into music were as a keyboardist in various local rock bands, but when that failed to yield the success and creative adventures he was craving, he leaped into action as Panic Bomber, a live electronic dance music act that found him singing over cascading self-composed beats and live instrumentation with brash abandon.

In recent years, Panic Bomber’s slew of singles, albums, and EPs have given way to his DJ sets, which tear through all of the influences—tech-house, electro, trance—that made his own music so compelling. He’s even started to throw live elements back into his computer-free sets. It all takes center stage at wild, off-the-wall parties thrown by his crew Slap N Tickle.

“I really try to take risks,” says Haig. “It’s all about finding the best underground tunes. Some of it might not be the most catchy, but it’s certainly going to be interesting and never boring.”

Robbie Wilde

Robbie Wilde

DEAFENING SILENCE: Robbie Wilde

Robbie Wilde would make you feel inadequate if he weren’t so busy making you dance. Wilde is legally deaf, yet his DJ sets run circles around his apparent competition. He’s most certainly not good-for-a-deaf-DJ good; he’s good, period.

“The way I enjoy music is more based on the groove,” says Wilde, who has come to be known as “That Deaf DJ.” “I have a little hearing left in my left ear, so I try to take advantage of that. I listen a little bit more, as funny as that sounds."

He may not be a Miami local, but his high-energy sets are right at home in this perpetually buzzing city, which is why he has been returning to play a benefit year after year for the Starkey Hearing Foundation at the Epic hotel during WMC. It’s just one stop on an increasingly busy jaunt around the globe.

Laura Sutnick
Laura Sutnick

CREATIVE DISCOVERY: Laura of Miami

Laura Sutnick has inspired a cult-like devotion among her fanbase that’s uncommon in this town. For several years, she served as the program director for University of Miami’s radio station WVUM, where she turned local ears onto tunes both cutting edge and rediscovered through her popular show Vamos a la Playa. The mix? About-to-break indie tracks, old-school Miami freestyle, Italo-disco, and exotica.

“I grew up between Bogota and here,” says Sutnick, giving some context to her eclectic tastes. “My mom used to listen to the weirdest stuff. We would get these pirated tapes from gas stations. That’s where it started.”

Though she’s since graduated from UM, Sutnick continues to redefine the city’s musical identity through Nightdrive Miami, a website/promotions outfit that has brought edgy new acts to the city’s stages. She’s also one of the brains behind the recently launched Klangbox, an online radio station chock full of shows and mixes from DJs both local and international that’s also the new home of Vamos. Her followers are pleased.

Dude Skywalker

The guys of Dude Skywalker

THE FUTURE IS NOW: Dude Skywalker

As musicians, the dudes of Dude Skywalker—Alex Borges, Fabio Galarce, and Sam Plessett—make zero-gravity lounge music: spacebound, groove-oriented tracks that aim to propel their listeners into the future. As DJs, they mostly spin tracks that fall into the same format. It’s all very Jetsons.

“Some songs might be more deep house, some might be more disco, others more hip-hop,” says Galarce. “At the end of the day, they all go back to the discolounge vibe.”

The team fell into place when the three were attending Florida State University in Tallahassee, but upon their return to Miami, they got serious about their craft. It’s paid off, as they’ve been ripping up venues around downtown and Wynwood, even landing some coveted screen time on the increasingly popular Internet showcase Boiler Room, self-billed as—and widely considered to be—“the world’s leading underground music show.” From the looks of it, their immediate future is just as bright as the imagined one that so inspires them.

DZA
DZA in action

DANCE WITH SOMEBODY: DZA

If DZA were spinning at the Super Bowl, it would quickly become the best and biggest arena-size house party ever to exist. His sets are just that fun. It’s tempting to label his style throwback—especially owing to the fact that he’ll pepper his mixes of hip-hop and house with ’80s R&B jams—but he’ll throw anything into the mix, regardless of when it was released.

“It’s what I like to do best,” says DZA, who was born in France but now calls Miami home. “I’m not scared to play Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ next to some hood record. It doesn’t bother me as long as it sounds right.”

His curatorial style is what has made Peachfuzz every Friday at The Garrett the most popular party in downtown Miami. He’s also behind DZA’s House, a monthly old-school house music party at Bardot. That said, the man is in demand, and can be caught spinning everywhere from South Beach to Hollywood.

Herrera is staging a spring fashion show on the fairway during one of the year's biggest golf championships, with a little help from Ivanka Trump and DJ Irie.

The style profile of a major golf event such as this week's Cadillac Championship doesn't have to be all polo shirts and checkered shorts—especially when Carolina Herrera is involved. The Venezuelan designer has partnered with Ivanka Trump to host a runway show of her spring 2014 collection at the star-studded tournament this Friday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. Why bring fashion to the fairway? "After seeing so much green, the women will be excited to see other colors and prints," notes Herrera. For music fans, the Miami Heat's DJ Irie will also play a role in the runway show happening at the Trump National Doral.

Here, we chat up Herrera—fresh from L.A. and a flurry of Oscar parties—about what's in store for the event, and what she thinks of host Ivanka's personal style.

Tell us about your relationship with Ivanka Trump.
CAROLINA HERRERA: I have known Ivanka for many years, and she has always been beautiful, intelligent, independent, and dedicated to her personal and work life.

How did the idea for the fashion show come about?
CH: Ivanka came to me with the idea to incorporate fashion with the world of golf. After three days of golf, the spring 2014 collection will be center stage on the fairway of the magnificent [Trump National] Doral Resort.

Can you sum up your look for spring, and why it works for the Miami woman?
CH: The spring 2014 collection is all about art in movement. There are many reasons this collection is perfect for Miami. The vibrant colors and effortless ease in the collection are similar to that which you will find in the city. Miami is a warm, cheerful place with a great day and night ambiance. The women in Miami are a reflection of this beautiful city.

carolina herrera spring fashion
Herrera's spring looks are perfect for breezy spring nights in Miami.

How do you and Ivanka work together as a team?
CH: Ivanka was wonderful to work with. With each project she takes on, she has a very clear vision of what she wants the end result to be. She was enthusiastic about the fashion show and believed it would be great to introduce this world to Carolina Herrera.

What's your impression of her personal style?
CH: I have always thought that Ivanka has an innate fashion sense, particularly how she chooses to dress for her everyday life. She is the woman that exudes confidence in the office, but also the woman that everyone turns to see when she walks into a party. She never strays from her personality and who she is.

The Trump National Doral Miami is located at 4400 NW 87th Ave. in Doral. Cadillac Championship tournament tickets include access to the fashion show.

Tom Colicchio Says Miami Restaurant Will Serve 'Mostly Seafood'

Colicchio's forthcoming 1 Hotel & Homes restaurant will serve organic, Mediterranean-type fare, and he'll "lean on" fellow chef Michael Schwartz for tips on local farmers.

Tom Colicchio
Top Chef judge and restaurateur Tom Colicchio is opening a restaurant in Miami.

Most people know Tom Colicchio as the longstanding lead judge and incisive voice of taste and reason on Bravo's Top Chef. Those who get to New York often have likely eaten at one of his restaurants: Craft, Colicchio & Sons, and Riverpark, as well as his farm-to-table restaurant at the Topping Rose House in the Hamptons. In the coming months, Colicchio will be opening an as yet unnamed restaurant in the soon to be LEED-certified 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach. Here, Colicchio talks to Ocean Drive about the restaurant's food and philosophy.

Why Miami, why now?
TOM COLICCHIO: Why not? It’s a good time. I had looked at Miami over the years and nothing clicked for whatever reason. Why now? It’s I think because of what the 1 Hotel is all about, this idea of an eco-friendly place that feels very natural. These things are all important.

Is that going to translate into your cuisine?
TC: It already does. In all of my restaurants, with the exception of one, all of the meat is antibiotic-free. Probably 95 percent of what we buy is organic. We care about the effects of what we buy and how our food is grown. And I say that not only as a chef, but as a father.

Is it going to be a Mediterranean concept?
TC: Well . . . yes and no. Whether you’re in South Florida or if you’re in the Mediterranean or anywhere where it’s kind of warm and there’s water, I always have this idea you’re on a sailboat. You get off, you get to land and what do you want? You want something simple and grilled. You want really high quality fish. It’s Mediterranean only because it’s olive oil-based and not butter-based.

How will Miami’s environment influence the cuisine?
TC: It’ll be mostly seafood. And then I’ve got to do my homework and obviously I’ll get some help from some friends of mine just to find out who the local farmers are. Michael Schwartz is a friend—we kind of grew up cooking together. So you know, I kind of lean on him a little bit, too. And I would love to figure out a way to actually grow up on the roof. We have a system that we use in New York where we’re growing food in milk crates, and it’s really effective.

When you're growing up as a boy, food is often about stuffing your face. When did you realize food could actually be a beautiful experience?
TC: I remember . . . there’s something about the process of cooking. Looking back on it now, I would have been diagnosed with ADD. I’ve been studying up recently about this . . . there’s this brain science that says the function of your brain—from getting stuff out of your brain to actually writing—is different than just what you need for fine motor skills. It’s a different pathway. I have a very hard time writing. So finding food and being able to have an idea, make it happen, and put it on a plate was like freedom to me. But you know, sometimes you find something that you’re meant to do at a very young age. For me it was very comforting to know that I had actually mastered something.

This Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch Took Six Years to Make

—ROBERTA NAASATimelyPerspective.com

Blending the arts of watchmaking, engraving, enameling, and more—all in a timepiece that not only reflects history but houses the visionary forethought of today and tomorrow—is no easy feat. But somehow, Jaeger-LeCoultre makes it seem like it is. This is especially the case with the brand’s Master Grande Tradition a Quantieme Perpetual 8 Jours SQ; a masterpiece of art thanks to the skeletonized work, the engraving and the enameling.

Six years in the making, the new Haute Horlogerie skeletonized timepiece is being created in a limited edition of just 200 pieces. It is inspired by a 1928 Grande Complication pocket watch and is replicated in wristwatch format in all its glory. Skeletonizing is an extremely difficult process that requires the master artisan to carefully pare away as much metal from each component without affecting its qualities. It is an art of patience, elegance, and effort. Says the brand’s master engraver, Dominique Vuez, “When we skeletonize a movement, we must assure that neither its rigidity nor its reliability could potentially be undermined.”

After completing a detailed skeletonizing plan, the master and his team take their traditional jigsaws and limes in hand and begin the delicate work—millimeter after millimeter. All parts are then beveled, polished, and elaborately engraved by hand, one by one. Additionally, the gold rings that adorn this watch are not only finely chiseled by hand, but also enameled transparent blue using the Grand Feu champlevé method that relies on extremely high temperatures of between 800 and 820 degrees Celsius. The Manufacture’s most experienced enamellers need two full days to complete the two enamel rings that surround the dial and movement.

Finally, a master watchmaker unites the more than 262 parts, including springs, levers, program wheels, pinions, and gears that comprise the Jaeger-LeCoutlre Calibre 876. Only after this step is the watch subjected to meticulous tests of function and stress in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 1000 Hours control unit. The watch offers complete perpetual calendar with age of moon, and an 8-day power reserve indicator with a day/night display. A total of 200 Master Grande Tradition à Quantième Perpetual 8 Jours SQ wristwatches will leave the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, and each one is unique. Numerous tiny details necessarily distinguish one skeletonized movement from all others, and the grand feu enamel in one watch will never be wholly identical with its counterpart in another.

While the video below showcases the Reverso watch and a few other masterpieces, it deftly demonstrates the brand’s artisanry and other amazing 180 skills used on its timepieces, including the Master Grande Tradition QP 8 Days. It’s worth the minute or so of your time.

New and upgraded hotel restaurants are attracting the 20- and 30-something crowd to the area.

Jové's modern Italian fare beckons at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach.

When The Breakers Palm Beach transformed formal French restaurant L'Escalier into HMF, a 1960s-themed small plates and sushi lounge, the resort's lobby became an instant hot spot. Then, this season, The Breakers gave an update to its Flagler Steakhouse—and a spate of other Palm Beach County hotels have followed suit, modernizing their signature dining rooms to attract a younger crowd.

Jové Kitchen & Bar at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach

Little touches like flambéed orange peel in a cocktail make Jové a must-try.

Gone is the hotel’s buttoned-up American restaurant. In its place we find a modern Italian concept with dishes like a warm buratta with marinated tomatoes, prosciutto broth, and basil, a branzino crudo, and Angus short ribs. An outdoor area with pool and ocean views, as well as a hopping lounge with stone-fired pizzettes, draws 20-somethings to Jové's door. 2600 S. Ocean Blvd., Palm Beach, 561-582-2800

The Blue at Boca Raton Resort & Club

With a lounge-like atmosphere, The Blue serves everything from local catch to steak to coffee and doughnuts.

A sleek restaurant focusing on organic, sustainable, and local ingredients is breathing new life into the 27th floor of the hotel’s pink tower. Members and guests can curl up on white leather banquettes, or grab a seat at the bar and gaze over the Intracoastal and Atlantic. Fare ranges from an expertly prepared wild salmon with pink grapefruit and fennel salad to a farmer's plate with farro, grilled mushrooms, carrots, and sautéed greens. 501 East Camino Real, Boca Raton, 561-447-3222

More than legendary steaks and an impressive wine list are drawing a crowd to the spa and golf resort’s Ironwood restaurant these days. iClub, a glass enclosed piano bar, opened this season to bring cocktails, light bites like carpaccio, truffle fries, and crab cakes, and live music to the golfer's paradise. 400 Avenue of the Americas, Palm Beach Gardens, 561-627-4852

Which Formula One Drivers Get Paid the Most?

Floridians have an innate need for speed on the roadways, and the world's most elite racing series, Formula One, begins a new era this weekend in Australia. In time for the new season, we take a look at the top 10 earners in the sport.

10. Romain Grosjean, Lotus
$2.05M USD (€1.5M)

Romain Grosjean

After years of too many crashes and not enough results, the Frenchman finally pulled it together in 2013, scoring six podiums in the process. He was rewarded with a $700,000 raise for 2014, and if he shows the same speed and consistency as he did last season, a drive with one of the big four teams beckons in 2015.

9. Sergio Perez, Force India
$2.75M USD (€2M)

Sergio Perez

After a standout rookie season followed by a single disappointing season at McLaren, 2014 will be a year of career rebuilding for the 24-year-old Mexican speedster. Forced into driving for a smaller team, he will need to show the brilliance he did in his rookie season to remind team bosses what he is capable of.

8. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull
$3.45M USD (€2.5M)

Daniel Ricciardo

Given that this is only Daniel Ricciardo's third full season in Formula One, his comparatively small salary is a representation of the gamble the four-time champion Red Bull team are taking on him. With a competitive car and a world champion teammate to compare himself to, the affable Aussie will be aiming for consistent podiums and a breakout win to repay the faith, and move further up this list in 2015.

7. Felipe Massa, Williams
$5.5M USD (€4M)

Felipe Massa

After 8 years at Ferrari, the Brazilian finds a new home at Williams in 2014. His salary might not be what he was used to at the famous Italian team, but with less corporate pressure and a team built around him, 2014 might be the year Massa and Williams return to the top step of the podium.

6. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari
$13.75M USD (€10M)

Kimi Raikkonen

After a stint in rallying and two successful comeback years at Lotus, the iceman is back at Ferrari where he won both his and the team's last title in 2007. Nothing but a championship in 2014 will do for the famously close-mouthed Finn, who is being paid considerably less than his teammate Fernando Alonso. If he beats him this year, the man many consider to be the fastest in Formula One will expect a big raise in 2015.

5. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes
$15.1M USD (€11M)

Nico Rosberg

A dark horse for 2014, the 28-year-old German could have a standout year. After a stellar 2013 where he won two races (including sweeping the famous Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo), Mercedes is expecting big things from Rosberg this year. Don't be surprised to see him higher on this list in 2015.

4. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull
$22M USD (€16M)

Sebastian Vettel

With more pole positions (45), wins (39), and championships (4) than any other driver in the field, Vettel is a relative bargain for the all-conquering Red Bull team. New engine regulations may hurt the team in 2014, but expect the German to be there or thereabouts.

3. Jenson Button, McLaren
$22M USD (€16M)

Jenson Button

After failing to even reach the podium last season, the Englishman needs a big turnaround in 2014 to continue to justify his massive salary. New regulations for the season should help the traditionally innovative team, but Button will need to find more consistency if he hopes to help the team to their first title in six years.

2. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
$27.5M USD (€20M)

Lewis Hamilton

Since his maiden championship in 2008, Lewis Hamitlon has had nearly everything—race wins, Hollywood stars for friends, and a girlfriend who is a Pussycat Doll. The only thing missing for the British driver is another championship. His star power keeps him tied at the top of the list of highest paid drivers, but with a fast car, new regulations that favor his driving style, and a year of fitting in with his new team, he has no excuses not to deliver in 2014.

1. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari
$27.5M USD (€20M)

Fernando Alonso

Ferrari know he's good. The fans know he's good. He knows he's good. But in his fifth year of driving for the Scuderia in an era that has been dominated by Vettel and Red Bull, the 32-year-old Spaniard knows he's running out of time to capture another title. If the results don't come in 2014, it'll be hard for Ferrari to justify keeping him as the highest paid driver in Formula One.

Everyone agrees that a lush green lawn provides a fantastic place to have fun in the warmer months, but did you know that a responsibly maintained lawn is a great choice for the environment? Lawns oxygenate the air, filter groundwater and absorb nutrients. They contain soil erosion and absorb more carbon dioxide than trees. Well-fed lawns even make your home a more enjoyable place; lawns reduce heat in your home by cooling the air and reduce traffic noise by dampening sound. A responsibly cared-for lawn can improve not just the curb appeal of your home, but the quality of your life. Florida residents, visit Scotts.com/Florida to learn backyard tips and techniques for keeping a healthy lawn while also protecting our natural waterways, as well as find out ways Scotts is helping along the way.

Recapping the twists and turns of the 2014 Formula 1 season kickoff in Melbourne.

Lewis HamiltonThe new Formula 1 season kicked off for 2014 last weekend in Melbourne.

1. Mercedes dominated

Not so much a surprise as a confirmation, but Mercedes was miles ahead of the competition. After finishing 1-3 in qualifying, Nico Rosberg went on to cruise to victory by 26 seconds. Even more impressive was that Mercedes-powered cars filled five of the next six finishing positions.

2. Red Bull was competitive

The general narrative coming out of pre-season testing was that Mercedes would be the strongest team, with Red Bull languishing near the back of the pack. This was thrown out the window on Saturday when Daniel Ricciardo put his Red Bull on the front row, and backed it up on Sunday with a strong second place. Though Ricciardo was ultimately disqualified when it was found that his car exceeded the maximum fuel limit, his encouraging display sets Red Bull up as Mercedes' strongest competitors for the title.

3. Kevin Magnussen was mighty

Not only did the Dane out-qualify his much more experienced teammate with a solid fourth place, the rookie went on to finish on the podium—something that hasn't been done by a debut driver since Lewis Hamilton in 2007. Classy.

4. Lotus was woeful

The less that can be said about Lotus' weekend, the better. They weren't strong in winter testing, but no one expected them to qualify last and second last. The race was even worse, with both drivers suffering retirements due to problems with their Energy Recovery Systems. The days when this team won back to back championships in 2005/06 must seem a very long way away.

5. Young drivers shone

If you needed more proof that F1's new generation is well and truly here, you got it at Saturday's rain soaked qualifying session. Tricky conditions are usually where experience counts, but it was the likes of Ricciardo, Magnussen, Bottas, and Kyvat (who at 19 years of age also went on to break the record of youngest driver to score points in F1) who were up front, with the usual suspects like Button, Raikkonen, and Vettel failing to make the top 10.

6. Ferrari and Williams were off the pace

No one expected them to win, but they were expected to be the teams nipping on the heels of Mercedes. Instead they lingered around or out of the top five all weekend, which is much less than they'd hoped for.

7. Only five cars broke down

Fears of less than 10 cars finishing were set to rest as the cars proved to be more reliable than anyone thought. Considering this was the biggest shake-up of engine regulations in decades, the fact that only five suffered terminal problems was impressive. However...

8. ...The new engines sounded awful

The outcry after the cars hit the track for the first time was near universal. While the racing was good, gone are the days when high pitched Formula 1 engines could be heard for miles around. Instead, the cars were left with not much more than a muted hum and an eerie turbo-whistle, which left drivers, teams, promoters, and fans in unanimous disapproval. Getting this fixed as soon as possible will be one of the season's biggest stories.

Miami Artist Antonia Wright Is In Pain, and She Wants You to See It

The subject of a new Spinello Projects exhibit, Wright's uncomfortable performance art often sees her bloodied and crying.

Miami's Antonia Wright is willing to endure pain for artistic gain. The multi-media performance artist and poet has gone to such extremes as covering herself in bees, breathlessly puffing a cigar to the point of nausea, and rolling around naked on a grimy, jagged South Beach street.

This Thursday, Spinello Projects will present a sizable exhibit, "You Make Me Sick: I Love You" (through May 3), of Wright's work over the past ten years; the show will swallow up the entire Spinello Projects space, as well as two adjacent galleries.

antonia wright, you make me sick
A still from Wright's 14-minute You Make Me Sick video about Fidel Castro. (image via

The exhibit takes its name from Wright's 2008 video performance piece,You Make Me Sick, in which she tearfully tries to smoke an entire cigar without taking a breath as a metaphor for Fidel Castro’s cruel regime over Cuba. The video is an excruciating fourteen and a half minutes long; the viewer first encounters Wright looking straight into the camera with a chilling confidence. After many coughing fits, she acknowledges the impossibility of the task as she literally gets sick and leaves the camera frame twice to puke audibly before the self-inflicted torture ends.

"Much of the work is political in inspiration and the actions need to mirror the intensity of what I am trying to convey," says Wright. On using video as a canvas and her body as a paintbrush, she explains, "I use my body as a tool to create these visual metaphors. The viewer will co-create the meaning of the work based off their experience."

antonia wright, are you okay
Wright, crying in public as part of Are You Ok?. (image via)

Not all of of Wright's pieces are this cringe-worthy, but they do have a tendency to make the viewer highly uncomfortable. "I hope to make people feel. In all the works I fight against apathy—for myself and the viewer. I think apathy is the worst emotion," she says.

In 2009's Are You OK? the 35-year-old artist "makes people feel" by crying in public and waiting for someone to take notice. It’s a relief to see that a young woman walks up and hugs Wright only 38 seconds into one of the films in the Miami/New York series.

antonia wright, deep water horizon

More recently, in 2011, Spinello was inspired by her desire to personally experience the 2010 BP oil spill's affect on marine wildlife, as well as citizens affected by cluster bombs in Laos, Vietnam and Afghanistan. ForDeep Water Horizon, she had someone film her rolling naked through puddles in the dirtiest South Beach alley she could find. Wright sustained multiple cuts and gashes all over her body, a black eye, and a concussion from the experience. But it's all in a day's work. "When I make the work, I don't think about how to inflict pain upon myself. I think about the aesthetic of the visual and then I do whatever it takes to achieve that," she says.

See more of Wright's work, including Miami-specific pieces like Suddenly We Jumped: Breaking the Glass Ceiling, wherein Wright used her body to shatter a sheath of glass during Art Basel Miami Beach, on Vimeo, or at this Thursday's opening. (6-10 p.m.) 2930 N.W. 7th Ave., Miami

7 DJs Who Always Wear the Same Thing

How often do you see Avicii without his backwards cap? Does Diplo ever step out in anything other than a suit and tie? And what's up with Zedd and all those red flannel shirts? As a slew of international DJs hit town for Miami Music Week, we hone in on seven spinsters and their signature style essentials.

1. Avicii's Backwards Caps

avicii always wears a backwards cap

He wore a beanie in his recent Ralph Lauren campaign, but Avicii prefers a backwards cap for everyday. If you like his look, shop his Miami Music Week-timed pop-up shop, selling Avicii-branded hats, T-shirts, tote bags, flip flops, and yes, condoms at 201 Lincoln Road now through March 31.

2. Miriam Nervo's Bowler Hats

miriam nervo always wears a bowler hat

One-half of Aussie sister DJ duo Nervo, Miriam was wearing shapely bowler hats long before Pharrell debuted his Arby's-inspired topper. Miriam and her sister Olivia often share clothes, and have even been tapped as spokesmodels for CoverGirl, but the bowler is a Miriam exclusive.

3. David Guetta's Black on Black

david guetta always wears black

DJ/producer David Guetta keeps his style simple-chic, as the French are wont to do, with all black looks, usually with a touch of leather.

4. Diplo's Suits and Ties

diplo always wears suits

Diplo isn't afraid to sweat it out on stage in a well tailored suit. His sharp style has made him a regular on the pages of GQ, and even landed him a Blackberry commercial. What did he wear to crowd surf in a hamster ball during his set at last year's Ultra? Yep, a dress shirt and tie.

5. Zedd's Lumberjack Shirts

dj zedd always wears flannel shirts

Just how many red flannels does this guy own? One of the youngest DJs on the scene, Zedd has blown up with chart-topping hits in the past year, but at least his wardrobe is staying down to earth.

6. Rebecca & Fiona's Pleated Skirts and Extreme Hair Color

djs rebecca and fiona dress like the spice girls

These doe-eyed EDM darlings aren’t sisters, but they like to coordinate their looks as if they were twins. Fiona has pastel locks that would make a My Little Pony jealous, and Rebecca takes ombré hair to color-block levels. The love pleated skirts and shoes that look like they were bought at a Spice Girls estate sale.

7. Tiesto's Graphic Tees

dj tiesto always wears graphic t-shirts

When you’ve been DJ'ing for as long as Tiesto has, comfort is key. Just like a European, the Dutchman opts for graphic shirts rather than plain white tees. In colder climes he often tops his look with a varsity-style jacket or leather bomber.
