A scene from a 2012 Summer Short

City Theatre's Annual Summer Shorts Festival splits sides this weekend as it returns to the Adrienne Arsht Center's intimate Carnival Studio Theater on Friday, June 7 at 8 p.m. Now in its eighteenth season, the month-long Miami-based comedic short play series is featuring a dozen original works in this year's edition, including six world premieres.

The 90-minute performances have been penned by some of the country's top talents, including winners of the City Theatre's National Short Play Competition. On our can't miss list is the world premiere of "Handing Down the Recipe," by screenwriter David Bar Katz. Katz is widely known for his writing credits on John Leguizamo's The Pest and Spike Lee's Freak

Another highlight of the Summer Shorts roster is local actor Todd Allen Durkin, who has had turns in TVs Magic City and Nashville. Durkin is also a South Florida stage regular, with past appearances in Miami's Mad Cat Theatre Company and Palm Beach's Dramaworks.

Summer Shorts will be performed from Thursdays to Sundays through June 30. Tickets are $35 with the exception of Saturday night showings, which are $40. 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305-949-6722
