Miami is heating up—and we're not just talking about the weather. Summer brings a rush of social events that sound more exciting than spending your afternoon at the gym. So we asked local trainers: There are so many ways to indulge this summer—what's your secret to staying fit while living the Miami lifestyle?
Marc Megna, Cofounder of Anatomy at 1220& Chief Body Architect
"The key is to keep that word, indulge, in its proper context. I think an indulgence is something occasional, not an everyday, or maybe even every-week, thing that you do. For me, a combination of consistent healthy behaviors—eating lots of vegetables and lean protein, drinking lots of water and exercise, among others—with a balance of taking advantage of the less-healthy attractions of Miami every once in a while is my 'secret' for staying fit in Miami.
"In addition, Miami has just as many healthy lifestyle benefits as unhealthy. Where else can you run around the beach, jump in the ocean, and eat fresh seafood and fruit almost every day of the year? Don’t just limit the less-fit Miami indulgences; attack the parts of Miami that will improve your body and mind."
Abbie Appel, Group Fitness Manager at Equinox
"I love to eat sweets and rich foods, and I'm always hungry because I'm exercising in the morning and in the evening, so I try to fill up on greens—any kind of lettuce like kale or green vegetables like green beans or broccoli. These foods are packed with nutrients and fiber and will fill you up so you can still indulge in those rich food, but force you to do so in moderation."
Dwayne Frection, Indoor Cycling Instructor at Flywheel
"It is important to find balance and to be consistent. For as many options as there are in Miami to indulge in partying, lounging, and fun, there are as many options to indulge in staying fit, working out, and being active. I don’t sacrifice working out for hanging out and having a good time. If I go out on Friday night, no matter how hungover I am on Saturday, at some point, I am getting a workout in. It’s all about consistency and balance."
Sam Karl, Trainer at Barry’s Bootcamp Miami Beach
"The great thing about Miami is that you are not limited to only several workout options; our amazing weather year round provides you with so many fitness choices. I like to go for runs on the beach or boardwalk, play beach volleyball, and go for a bike ride—don’t worry, you don’t have to do it all in one day. Since Miami does get quite hot in the summer, I suggest doing most of your activity or outside workouts earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. You must also make sure that staying hydrated is your No. 1 priority.
"It’s also important to recognize that you can still take advantage of the amazing restaurants that Miami has to offer without packing on the pounds. While I do suggest staying away from the fried foods and all the sugary 'vacation' alcoholic beverages, having a few drinks in moderation or your favorite dish won’t make or break your road to fitness as long as you stick to moderation. Healthy eating and regular workouts are the best way to see results but no one is ever perfect, and I don’t expect you to be either."
Janet Jones, Creator of the Vixen Workout
"There are so many ways to indulge and I don't deny myself any of the fun. It's about making good choices. If you're going to go out and drink, eat a healthy meal prior to going out. That way you are not starved after a few drinks and are less likely to go for the greasy, fried stuff. When ordering drinks, stay away from the sugary drinks—drinks like a Mai Tai can come packed with 300-plus calories. Options under 100 calories are vodka, rum, or tequila on the rocks with tonic or soda."
Julie Jacko, Founder of Barre Motion
"Movement and moderation are my mantras. I make sure that I move every day, either doing a Barre Motion workout or running outdoors along our beautiful beaches. While I enjoy the many culinary flavors of our city, and love tasting red wine from all over the world, I'm mindful of engaging in moderation—that is, enjoying the taste and avoiding overindulgence."
